SharePoint Migration Status
How GDOTS SharePoint sites are migrating to Microsoft 365.
What's Happening
GDOTS is migrating SharePoint from an on-premises, external-only environment to Microsoft 365. This move enables richer collaboration capabilities, a modern platform experience, and secure external connections through M365's built-in sharing and identity features.
As part of this migration, all external SharePoint sites that were previously hosted on-prem are being moved to the M365 cloud environment.
Why the Migration
- Modern platform: M365 SharePoint offers improved performance, mobile access, and a modern user interface
- Better collaboration: Richer sharing, co-authoring, and communication features
- Secure external access: Guest accounts and B2B connections provide controlled, auditable access for external partners
- Compliance and security: The M365 environment operates in Azure Government GCC High to meet federal security and export control requirements for handling controlled unclassified information (CUI) and International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR)-controlled data
- Reduced infrastructure: Moving off on-prem hardware to Microsoft's cloud
Wave-Based Approach
Sites are being migrated in waves, not all at once. This means:
- You will receive your GDOTS guest account credentials along with a link to the first SharePoint site that has been migrated for your access
- As additional sites are migrated, you will receive separate notification emails with the new site links
- Not all sites you previously had access to will be available immediately. They will come online as each wave completes
Tip
Keep an eye on your email for additional site migration notifications from GDOTS. Each notification will contain the new M365 SharePoint link for that site.
What Changes for Partners
| What | Before (On-Prem) | After (M365) |
| SharePoint URLs | On-prem URLs | New M365 URLs (provided in notifications) |
| How you sign in | Previous access method | GDOTS guest account or B2B (your org credentials) |
| Security | Previous authentication | Multi-factor authentication (MFA) required |
| Your documents | On-prem SharePoint | Preserved (migrated to M365) |
Important
Your old on-prem SharePoint URLs will no longer work after migration. Use the new links provided in your notification emails.
What to Expect
- First: You'll receive a welcome email with your GDOTS guest account credentials and a link to your first migrated site
- Then: Complete your account setup (password change, MFA) using the MFA Setup Guide
- Over time: You'll receive additional emails as more sites you have access to are migrated
- Recommended: Have your IT team set up a B2B connection so you can use your own organization's credentials instead of managing a separate guest account
Recommended
While guest accounts work immediately, we encourage your organization to set up a B2B connection for a simpler, more secure experience. Learn about the benefits of B2B.
